Course Description:

Drawing is a key discipline of the visual arts.  The skill of observation will increase the student’s hand/eye coordination.  Subjects and surfaces will vary with each assignment including the figure, landscape, still life, and portrait.  Materials such as pencil, ink, charcoal, and pastel will be explored.

 

What to expect:

This class is geared to refine your skills and control with various materials.  Whether it is looking at a subject or drawing straight from your imagination, this class will leave you with the skills necessary to make an excellent drawing…as long as you put in the effort.  In addition, you will be pushed to think critically and conceptually in creating works in this class which will be meaningful to you and still look awesome. 

 

Supply and Class Rules:

 

The rules of the class supplies are pretty simple.

1. Treat all materials with care, even the pencils and erasers. 

2.  If you don’t know what it is, PLEASE DON’T TOUCH IT!!   

3.  Make sure all supplies and used garbage get put away or thrown away at the end of the period in the right place!!!  Tables need to be wiped off at certain times, please help with this; assigned duties will be given as necessary.

4. No digital devices are to be used in class ( i.e MP3 players, cell phones, etc…)

5. No food in the classroom. (No drinks/food near computers!!!)

6. Stay at your seats until the bell rings

 

Due Dates, homework, and grades:

Due dates for projects will be assigned based on time needed for completion of projects.  Projects are expected to be turned in on time or be subjected to reduction of one letter grade per week the project is late.  Extended work time will be on a case by case basis and must be worked out with me.

 

Homework assignments will be accepted only up to one day late with a one letter grade reduction applied to the assignment (Outstanding circumstances aside)

 

Grades will be based on homework assignments, sketchbook assignments, any quizzes and tests which are part of the class, daily participation/work checks, and final project assignments.  You will see a grading rubric for most projects.  Grades should be given to you/posted within a week of the due date/turn in.

 

Grading scale:

  

EXCEEDING (4)--     MEETING (3)----   APPROACHING (2)-   STARTING (1)---     FAILING (0)-----

 

Projects and homework: 70% of quarter grade

Participation and Growth: 30% of quarter grade

 

 

Sketchbook Assignment Have sketchbook by________

 

You will need to purchase a sketchbook (roughly 8.5” x 11” in size)  This will be used throughout the entire semester for project ideas, brainstorming, as well as sketchbook assignments throughout the class.  We will have sketchbook assignments due about every 7 days.  Each assignment should take you around 30 minutes, however, you are more than welcome to work longer if you want/need to. 

 

Sketchbook assignments will have varying themes from week to week.  Examples of these from the past have been metaphorical self portrait, obsessive drawing, and good vs evil.

 

 

Grading for sketchbooks depend on assignment length and time allotted.  We will be viewing a Powerpoint of examples from past students to illustrate what has been done and what has received excellent grades!

 

Grading:

 

A -  Student challenged themselves through exploration of theme and concept with clear evidence of effort and craftsmanship being demonstrated.

 

B – Student showed exploration of the theme and pushing individual concepts with evidence of effort and craftsmanship.

 

C – Student showed some exploration of theme and concept with some evidence of effort.

 

D -  Student showed minimal exploration of theme and little effort is evident.

 

F- Student did not explore theme/concept and showed little if any effort.
